Dr. Bumgardner received her BS degree from the College of William and Mary (1979), her MD from the University of Virginia (1983), and PhD from the University of Minnesota (1992). She completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Minnesota (1991). She has also completed fellowships in the areas of surgical infectious disease and endoscopy at the University of Minnesota and in transplantation at the University of California San Francisco (1991-1993). Following completion of her Transplant Fellowship, she was appointed as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Ohio State University in 1993 and was promoted to Professor of Surgery in October 2005.
Dr. Bumgardner studies the immunobiology of cell transplantation using rodent models of liver cell and pancreatic islet transplantation. A particular focus of these studies is the role of the parenchymal cell in initiation of specific innate and adaptive immune responses.
