Area of Expertise

Oxygen, Oxidant and Redox Signaling.

Interest and Subspecialty

Molecular medicine with a focus on antioxidant/redox regulated signal transduction and the DNA microarray technology. Projects on wound healing, neurodegeneration/stroke and reoxygenation-associated cardiac remodelling.

Dr. Sen graduated with his BS in Physiology (honours), Chemistry and Zoology in 1987 from the University of Calcutta, India. He received his MS in Physiology from that institution in 1990. He attended the University of Kuopio, Finland from 1990-1994, where he received his PhD in Physiology. He was a Post-Doc at the University of California, Berkeley from 1995-1996, when he was appointed Assistant Research Biochemist. His first independent investigatorship was as a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1998. Dr. Sen moved to Ohio State in 2000 to be Assistant Professor of Surgery and Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. In 2003, he was promoted with tenure to Associate Professor. Currently, he serves as Vice Chairman of Research of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Sen directs the DNA Microarray and Genetics facility of the Institute. At the Institute, he is also the Associate Director for Applied Research and Inventions.

Dr. Sen’s awards include receiving the Moitra Gold Medal from The Physiology Society of India in 1989, a Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Free Radical Research in 1998, a President Honor Award from the International Society of Pathophysiology in 1998, a Citatation of Recognition by the Mayor of Columbus in 2002, and the Rayson Huang International Award from Malaysia in 2003. He is the PI on two active NIH awards- one from the NIGMS on wound healing and the other from NINDS on vitamin E. In addition, he holds a R13 award from NIH-NIAMS.

Dr. Sen has been on several grant review committees including NIH, NASA and NSF study sections. He is the editor-in-chief of the international journal Antioxidants and Redox Signaling (www.liebertpub.com). Dr. Sen is on the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Physiology (jap.physiology.org), DNA & Cell Biology and Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise. He serves as a peer reviewer of over 25 major journals including American Journal of Physiology, Cancer Research, FASEB Journal, Free Radical Biology Medicine, Free Radical Research, J. Molecular & Cellular Cardiology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Circulation, Journal of Immunology and Science. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (www.acsm.org) and of the American College of Nutrition.

Dr. Sen has organized and chaired several major international conferences/symposia in the field of oxidant and antioxidant biology and has presented over 30 invited lectures during the last 4 years.
